Draw the Line Project
Graffiti Zone is excited to announce it's new project titled "Draw the Line." Draw the Line is a youth-based project designed to draw awareness to students and the community at large through arts installation and murals. Students will participate in making self-produced guerrilla art message boards and install them throughout the community. The program will exist in multiple locations, each session creating a new dialogue around the question "Where do you draw the line?" The students will also participate in a mural line drawing, allowing a group to truly collaborate together and literally "draw the line." The program will culminate with a community show, celebrating the work done throughout the session and allowing the dialogue to continue with the community at large. Currently, we are working with Cameron Elementary School.

Project will be led by artist Laura Pawson. Laura is originally from Brooklyn, New York and has been living, working, teaching, and creating art in Chicago for the last six years. She received her Bachelors of
Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, studying Photography, Fibers and Material Studies and Art Education. Check out her artwork at www.laurapawson.com

Participants in Graffiti Zone's summer program had the opportunity to work in a puppet making workshop and currently have their puppets showcased in the Chicago Children's Museum's current exhibit titled, "Mexico: Festival of Toys." The exhibit showcases a unique collection of toys, on loan from the Papalote Children's Museum in Mexico City, reflecting Mexican culture and traditions. Dating from 1920 to the present, they include handmade dolls, colorful puppets and marionettes (including those designed by Graffiti Zone artists(, traditional puzzles and games, musical instruments, and wood-carved and paper-mache animals. Additional interactive experiences include a puppet theater, toy-making workshop, special area for infant, and other rooms located throughout the museum; encouraging youth and families to explore, construct and play with toys.
On Monday, September 13, 2010, Graffiti Zone artists were invited to the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the exhibition.
Check out Graffiti Zone puppets and other toys September 13, 2010 until March 13, 2011
Currently, we are implementing a puppet workshop at Pablo Casals Elementary School with 9 middle school students. Students are creating puppets, video and a live performance.

Summer Murals
Graffiti Zone interns, artists and community members worked hard this summer on two different murals. Once a week, Graffiti Zone interns and artists collaborated with community members to create a "Tree Mural." Youth, parents and artists came out each week to paint a tree, beautify their community, and potentially win the $5.00 cash prize for the best tree of the week.
Graffiti Zone intern Yasmine Lewis describes the project...
"We get to meet new kids and people everyday. I look around and I see a lot of people having fun painting. We have kids and their parents to come and help us make the community pretty. I love when the parents
come out with their kids to accomplish something good...I wish to keep doing this because it makes me feel like a better person and happy to be in a community that's trying to make it better."
Students also completed a "Draw the Line" mural; a collaborative group project that resulted in a giant abstract line drawing.

My Favorite Thing About Chicago Video
This past Spring, Graffiti Zone artists started a new video project titled "My Favorite Thing About Chicago." Youth hit the streets of Humboldt Park, the South Side, Gold Coast, the Loop, and Lincoln Park to interview people and video record them. Youth were excited to meet new people, see new places and get to know what other people enjoyed about their city. One students describes the project...
"Some people I met were so nice. They told me things I really didn't know. People still know how to have a good time in a beautiful way. I love Chicago."
Tony interviewing a street musician downtown.

Stop the Violence Video
This past Spring, Graffiti Zone youth spoke out against the violence in their community. They posted their video on the internet to encourage people to hear their voices and their own individual solutions to stopping
the violence in their communities.
Kamyiah Page speaks out...
"This isn't funny...this is just breaking me, how I see everyone, my cousins, my brothers, how I see this happening to them, how their lives got taken for something dumb. I'm not smiling, I'm not laughing.
This isn't funny at all."

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum
In April of 2010, Graffiti Zone was invited as a part of an earth day event to participate in a gallery show at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum along with other organizations. Graffiti Zone artists displayed and sold work from a number of different projects. Students spent the month studying collage through artist Romare Bearden, creating their own collages through magazine, newspaper, fabric, and found materials. They studied different cultures and created a collage based on one specific culture. Students met other artists along with other Chicago-based organizations.
Graffiti Zone would like to thank Matt Cardoni for inviting Graffiti Zone artists to display their work at this exhibit!

Freedom Art Show and Van Gogh Art Competition
Last Spring Graffiti Zone artists participated in a visual arts workshop focused around the concept of Freedom. Students discussed the idea of freedom, past and present, and what freedom meant to them on a personal level. Students created beautiful large scale art pieces depicting these perspectives.
Students also participated in a Van Gogh Art competition. Students researched the life, art, and artistic style of Vincent Van Gogh and competed to draw a flower that looked the most like Van Gogh's unique
style. Students worked with paint on canvas, creating beautiful representations of Vincent Van Gogh's flowers. The show included music, poetry and dance by 10 Graffiti Zone artists. Check out all the video on our website soon.
Young artists displayed work from both
projects in a Spring Art Show.

YOUR DONATION:
makes this all possible! We have another very exciting year planned and we hope that you will continue to be our partner and provide these amazing opportunities for youth in the West Humboldt Park Community.
Most of you have heard about the increased violence in our community this year. Our leaders think its time for a change -how about you?
~ Mayor Daley described violence on Chicago streets as the city's most immediate and pressing challenge. He went on to say ""Incident after incident. A total disregard of human life. And that's what it is. I plead with people. These are your children and our children,
too,".
~U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan says youth violence in Chicago and other parts of the country is "staggering" and "absolutely unacceptable." "We don't live in Iraq, our children have to be safe going to and from school," says Duncan. "There's clearly a huge amount of work to be done."
Lastly, a short story from President Obama;
~"I was a young organizer , intent on fighting joblessness and poverty on the South Side, and I still remember one of the very first meetings I put together. We had worked on it for days, but no one showed up. Our volunteers felt so defeated, they wanted to quit. And to be honest, so did I.
But at that moment, I looked outside and saw some young boys tossing stones at a boarded-up apartment building across the street. They were like boys in so many cities across the country - boys without prospects, without guidance, without hope. And I turned to the volunteers, and I asked them, "Before you quit, I want you to answer one question. What will happen to those boys?" And the volunteers looked out that window, and they decided that night to keep going - to keep organizing, keep fighting for better schools, and better jobs, and better health care. And so did I. And slowly, but surely, in the weeks and months to come, the community began to change.
You see, the challenges we face will not be solved with one meeting in one night. Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time.
We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. We are the hope of those boys who have little; who've been told that they cannot have what they dream; that they cannot be what they imagine.
Yes they can. "
For the Holidays this year- make a difference!
